Well, not sure if you should avoid Hiaasen then. His stuff, as I mentioned, is over-the-top satire. If the idea of a former-governor turned one-eyed swamp vigilante telling a little boy in a hurricane relief camp "Hurricanes are an eviction notice from God" doesn't appeal to you...

You might like Crais if you're really into characterization. Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are great characters. Keep in mind, though, that after being on an Elmore Leonard kick, the characterization in just about anything else you read is going to be a step or two down.

There's no one like Leonard.

And Connelly is still probably a good bet. He's more about tone and mood than wild and crazy characters or plot, but his main guys are always very complicated and well-developed.

Harry Bosch, for example, is short for Hieronymous Bosch. His prostitute mother gave him that name. So there you go.

I'm just looking for writers with more of an interest in psychology than the nitty gritty procedural kind of stuff.

I'll definitely give those writers you mentioned a shot.  I'm open to about anything at least once.

There is no compression on a standard audio CD.

The ones are represented by a bump beginning or ending, and the zeros by
no change. For technical reasons such as avoiding a long sequence of
ones or zeros, each 8 bit byte is converted to a 14-bit code for actual
storage on the disc. Then there is a great deal of rearrangement of data
to make error correction robust.

(Similar things happen on hard drives.)

Not exactly the lengths, but a long string of zeros (in the 14 bit code)
would give a long bump or a long gap, yes. Codes are chosen to avoid
sequences of ones.

Hiaasen is really nutty, but I still recommend him. Sample bit from a Hiaasen book (from Native Tongue): a publicist for a Disney World-esque theme park finds out his employers are bulldozing the wetlands he played in as a kid and decides to wage war using the only tools he knows, PR releases. He issues fake PR releases on company stationery saying things like "If your children hugged any of the people dressed as animated characters on Friday, please have them tested for TB" and "Although flooding on the grounds has produced a slight problem with water moccasins, rubber boots will be available for rental at reasonable prices."

I love Carl Hiaasen.
