Naw, seriously. We were playing at Stache's in Columbus Ohio. And while we're hanging out with Bela before the show ( at his place) we asked what was up with the opening band
(GBV) whom we had never heard of (and this is RIGHT before they 'broke') I thought they were some kind of choir. Bela says 'no way, they rock and they're totally into the Grifters' So he plays a very little bit of Vampires on Titus and we're all like '.....hmmm.."
So later we go down to the club and we're playing pool and these crazy old dudes come up and are like "'you the Grifters? What're you drinkin? Anything you want. " So we each ordered a drink and Bob and Mitch and Tobin got them and bela tells us 'That's them'.
So we end up hanging out downstairs drinking and smoking and having fun and we thought they were freaks. But then they took the stage and instantly became our favorite band. Bob was doing high kicks while drinking beer and came down on the monitor and went sprawling into the audience. they blew us off the stage for sure.
After that we tried to play together as often as we could .
We did much touring (often with the Strapping Fieldhands)
and basically we got to watch as thier star ascended.

I just wish I could remember more of it.

You don't REALLY have to see Vol. 1 to follow Vol. 2.  Vol 1 is all set-up really.  All questions and no answers...but it's part of the experience.  Because the journey starts off as one thing and ends up as something else entirely...but 2 stands on it's own, I think.

I wish they hadn't split it up though.

So how did you like the movie other than the "mamba"?

I think they're the same age.

I remember one time we were playing at Deland (?) university in Fla. And i was really bored waiting for the show
to start. So i was sitting in front of the UC or whatever with the promoter and some of his friends sneaking swigs off something when suddenly the doors to GBV's van opens and Mitch and Kevin get out, then Dave and Bob. And Dave and Bob are arm-in-arm and smiling warmly and they sort of proceed past us up the steps into the UC really kinda slowly.
It was like that scene in THINGS CHANGE after the mob boss and Don Ameche become very close. ...and promoter dude is like 'did you just see that?'

I guess they'd just gotten really stoned and bonded over some David Bowie record or something.

it seems like only yesterday, but it was nine years ago that i first saw the grifters, and it too happened at stache's.  and i remember talking to stan aboot GBV and he told me the same story uncle tripp just told, except he actually said that y'all thought Vampire on Titus sounded like shit when Bela played it for you.  

anway, later on that evening, bob pollard and his brother jim and a few other daytonians showed up for the show and i have this fond memory of watching them gulp down Bud by the pool table and then they started tackling each other like they were playing arena football or something.
