So i turned the girl who turned me on to Guided by Voices onto the Grifters. So i've noticed that the two bands did a split album, and that a few of the songs, especially vocally have similarities...probably all be said many times before, but how did the two bands know of each other?

Ever since i was in 8th grade (when my cousin's friend picked me up in one) I have always wanted a 69 Camaro...or maybe 68, 67...that body style. Black...with black vinyl interior...the kind of vinyl that would eventually crack and expose the yellow foam. A big V-8...that made the car lunge forward when you tapped the gas pedal.

Well when it came time to start driving I  couldn't find one in good condition for what i could afford...i settled for a sweet pontiac lemans (couldn't afford the GTO...went with the cheap model)...and then eventually had to get a car with good gas milege for commuting to work. That's life.

But today as i was on my way to work, black fuel incenerator came on...and for a moment my 95 civic became that Camaro...cruising down a country road on a summer night.

Then i had to stop for a crossing guard and i was back.

Oh, it would have been okay if you just plowed through the crossing guard. "Black Fuel" defense holds up in court now, particularly if point of impact is at the part of the song where those whirling, building, um, sounds are rising and multiplying and turning in on themselves.

Were they inventive...or just cheap?

Or anybody list your favorite hard-boiled writers...

Or any other favorite genre-type writers...

I drive a lot and I'm looking for books on tape to listen to while I drive.  I want stuff that's SMART and GOOD, but it has to be story-based.  I'm not looking for experimental/abstract stuff.  It's impossible to drive to.

Okay. I thought you were giving me a hard time. My bad. You probably think I'm paranoid now.

...you probably ALL do...

Anyway, for classics, try WR Burnett or James M. Cain. For newer stuff, Michael Connelly is pretty good. His Harry Bosch books are bleak and harsh and fairly grittily realistic.

Also, if you're in the mood for something a little loopy, the Elvis Cole books that Robert Crais did are pretty good. They start out light (though very good) and get seedier and more violent as you go along. Everything he's written other than the Cole books is pure shit, though.

And even though one of his books was raped into a piece of shit Demi Moore movie, Carl Hiaasen is a sick bastard and an evil genius. Not everyone can take him, as his stuff is way-over-the-top satire, but I think it's evil, evil genius. "Stormy Weather" is terrific.

Yeah, come to think of it, Michael Connelly sounds pretty ideal for what you're looking for. It's well-written and gripping, but still very genre-based. It should be compulsively listenable on tape and it should be easy to find, as he's a big name in crime fiction.

I have two more live Decemberists live records. If anyone's interested, I'll put 'em up on the ftp tonight. I also may have the first Pixies show from last week within a few hours.

Cool.  Thanks.  I've just about burned through the Elmore Leonard section of the library.
