Senator Barack Obama says that Fox News Channel's coverage of him and his campaign has knocked two or three percentage points off his lead over John McCain. In an interview to appear in Sunday's New York Times Magazine, reported by TVNewser.com Thursday, Obama remarks: "If I were watching Fox News, I wouldn't vote for me, right? Because the way I'm portrayed 24/7 is as a freak! I am the latte-sipping, New York Times-reading, Volvo-driving, no-gun-owning, effete, politically correct, arrogant liberal. Who wants somebody like that?"

Oh, Oh!  Me! I do!  I love me some latte-sipping, New York Times-reading, Volvo-driving, no-gun-owning, effete, politically correct, arrogant liberal! I wish they were real, not just someone's strawman!

Fuck it, I'm going to become one!  At this point, all I need is the volvo... Well, that and the New York Times.  Mmm, I really should sip more lattes.  I like espressos, but that's just because that's how the portuguese drink coffee.  Does that count?

Somehow, in the midst of election season, this song keeps popping into my head:

Hey wanna laugh at stupid religious people and the stupid religious stupidities they stupidly say?

Quote
I see this financial breakdown, moreover, as being not merely a moral crisis but the monetary expression of the broader degradation of our values – the erosion of duty and responsibility to others in favour of instant gratification, unlimited demands repackaged as ‘rights’ and the loss of self-discipline. And the root cause of that erosion is ‘militant atheism’ which, in junking religion, has destroyed our sense of anything beyond our material selves and the here and now and, through such hyper-individualism, paved the way for the onslaught on bedrock moral values expressed through such things as family breakdown and mass fatherlessness, educational collapse, widespread incivility, unprecedented levels of near psychopathic violent crime, epidemic drunkenness and drug abuse, the repudiation of all authority, the moral inversion of victim culture, the destruction of truth and objectivity and a corresponding rise in credulousness in the face of lies and propaganda -- and intimidation and bullying to drive this agenda into public policy.

So funny that fundamentalist Christians like to blame atheists for "moral breakdown" in society when in fact, so many atheists, maybe even a majority of them in the US anyway, are secular humanists whose political beliefs are typically focused on sympathy for the poor, the sick, and the oppressed, an outlook most famously held in history by a certain dead Jewish guy.

H.G. Wells once said that history is a race between education and catastrophe.
