WIRE brought on the punk.  Or the rock.

I was pleasantly surprised: they played a number of old songs!  I wasn't expecting it, last time they toured extensively, they brought along a cover band (The Ex-Lion Tamers) that would open for them by playing old Wire numbers, just so they could get that out of the way.  I have a DVD of a show they gave in 1979 for german TV were the audience, obviously expecting songs they knew, look totally lost as Wire goes through a set composed entirely of new songs.  At the end someone shouts a request, and gets turned down by Graham Lewis wit a  terse "we don't do requests".  So I wasn't expecting old songs.

Three encores!  They did The 15th, and finished their set with  1 2 X U.  Just that was worth the price of admission!

Bruce Gilbert wasn't with them, they had Margaret Fiedler from Laika doing Gilbert's parts.

The Wedding Present were cool, but they looked a little tired.  It was obvious that they weren't playing to their audience, as most people didn't know who the hell they were.  They played a lot of songs from SeaMonsters, and a few more recent ones I didn't know.

Old farts these days rock harder than the kids...

The more I look back at music and art the more I wonder if punk was even ever born.

Punk is a state of mind.

Yeah, but what state of mind?

Not sure. I know he's there for the Kelp Records showcase (including Flecton!). Doing a BBQ (this time with Mint Recs) like they do here for NXNE, too. Here's the line-up. Obviously missed today's bbq/gig, but go say howdy to Miche tomorrow! Rhume are very entertaining. And I heart Camp Radio. Hilotrons are friends too, as is AV and the P... not so much a fan of Andrew V's as a friend, but you know how it goes. (He has a wee bit of a Jonathan Richman thing going on if you're into that.)

SATURDAY OCTOBER 4TH
KELP RECORDS SHOWCASE

Les 3 Minots (3812 St-Laurent)
21:00 Andrew Vincent
22:00 Rhume
23:00 Flecton
00:00 Camp Radio
01:00 HILOTRONS

So, Miche is looking good and it was a real treat to get to chat with JeffRoomie. I only caught the last few songs by Vincent, but it seemed to have a Billy Bragg thing going on...Rhume was retarded/fun...their medley was less a medley than it was three songs that ended abruptly/disastrously before the next one began just as awkwardly (this was high comedy). Their take on "Uncontrollable Urge" was probably the closest I will ever get to seeing Devo live (how sad is that?).

Flecton had only Scott Terry in tow (I bumped into Scott first, standing outside the club smoking a cig, I shook hands with him as I re-introduced myself for the sixth or seventh time and he responded - for the sixth or seventh time - confident that he did not remember me, adding "I was probably drunk". I said, "Yes, I do believe you were under the influence of something.") so the Big Sky was a little sparse and impov-y. Werbo's "Weakest Valentine" sounded great (two chords, as Jeff explained to me - listening back to it I realize it is a simple song - that hesitation before the cymbal crash really makes it work). Miche did manage to convince the crowd that he was high on every drug imaginable.

Pop punk in the style of Camp Radio doesn't really do much for me, but they weren't bad. I wasn't really feeling the groove by the time HILOTRONS came on stage...I definitely would have preferred to have just chatted with Jeff all night.

I'm glad there was a least one Montreal crappitieer representing.

Fucking Harper keeps arguing that voting for the Bloc is a waste of time.  Well, normally I would concur, but not this time: if voting for the Bloc keeps the conservatives from having a majority, or even becoming the government, it is not a waste of time.

had my 20 year high reunion saturday night...good times had by all. Some people I could hardly recognize. It was nice to see an ex-girlfriend who got a little bigger over the years. She was in college when we started dating...her best friend and I would drive up to her school to visit...one time we got stuck in this massive traffice jam on route 80...some sort of tracker trailer jackknife...we were going no where...barriers on either sides for miles and no where to turn around. We did have a case of beer in the trunk...broke into that and proceeded to get pretty ripped for the next two hours. So this girl...who i absolutely had a crush on...told the T _ _ _ that after that trip she was totally in love with me. DAMN! DAMN! DAMN! You can't tell somebody that 18 years later. Apparently, according to T _ _ _ I was flirting with her way too much throughout the night. I don't recall this...i recall it as "constructive conversation"

the best part was the after party...we go to some girl who i graduated with brother-in-law's house...total party house...first thing we see is two stripper poles in the middle of living room...then the whole backyard is concrete and tiki bars...there's no kitchen...just a game room.  Apparently it's a "swingers house"....it was totally bizzare...we had to leave like at 1am because the baby sitter had to go...but apparently some of the girls were dong some pole dancing after that.

If I could get on facebook at work i could attach some photos...maybe when i'm home.

Not one...but TWO stripper poles...right where the living room would have been

oh and beyond the poles was big mirrors on wall...

and then there was giant deer head on the wall.

And a lifesize replica of this creepy death looking butler guy.

It's a place I definitly wish i wasn't practically blind drunk at so I would have soaked in more of the details...i just remember going in the backyard to get a beer and realizing there was no grass...the whole yard was  concrete...with two tiki bars.

James Bond author Ian Fleming saved the British intelligence service from collapse in the 1940s, it has emerged.

Fleming was an officer in the British navy.s intelligence department during the Second World War when he advised his bosses not to close down MI6.

Secret files, released after more than 60 years, reveal Fleming was the navy.s liaison officer with MI6, which gave him valuable background knowledge for his Bond books.

Too bad it didn't turn him into a better writer.  What's the source?

so, Saturday night Stan had to go tear down a wedding or something and couldn't practice but he dropped Bobby off at the practice space and I met them there about 7. Stan left then me and Bobby drank and smoked and shot the shit for a while. Talked about what we have to do to finish the record. We have a dry-erase board now which i highly recommend for bands.
I knew Jared was gonna stop by and we'd do some jamming. Bobby was happy because it meant he gets to play drums all night. So I was standing outside waiting for jared to pull up and who pulled up unannounced? Mr John Stivers. Then Jared got there so we had a little Total Strangers reunion. kinda.
Most of the evening was Bobby on drums, Jared on bass and Stivey on guitar. I took the opportunity to get to know our 8-track a little better.
Then S____ showed up and we had a full-on party on our hands. We got seriously crunked up. I played drums while S_____ and Bobby sang. That was fun. I busted my finger open on the side of one of the cymbals.

Yesterday S_____ and I both felt as though we'd caused ourselves some brain damage.

good times.
