Home Depot = Heavy supporter of the Republican Party and George W. Bush (and, of course, the sweat shops of China). Tom Ridge used to be on the board of directors.

Doesn't surprise me at all that Home Depot backs Repugs. Huge US corp backs party that sucks up to big US corporations? Shocker!

Now if I find out they are in it because of particularly nasty policies, that they mistreat their own immigrant or gay employees or such, that might tip me over the line. But for now (sigh) I gotta shop somewhere, and I really doubt if I looked into it that the other chains are much better.

And yeah, Chad, I remember HQ. How long ago did they go under? Seems like they were still going when I moved (2001.)

One place I will draw the line is Wal-Mart. When people tell me they got something cheap at Wal-Mart, I invariably ask, "Yes, but how much did it cost in the tears of Indonesian children?"

Fucking sweat-shop usin' bastards.

Statement from Roger Ebert

After 33 years on the air, 23 of them with Disney, the studio has decided to take the program named "Siskel & Ebert" and then "Ebert & Roeper" in a new direction. I will no longer be associated with it.

The show was a wonderful experience. It was a great loss to me when surgery in July 2006 made it impossible for me to appear on the air any longer. Although I remained active behind the scenes, I feel that Richard Roeper and several co-hosts, notably Michael Phillips and A.O.
Scott, have excelled at carrying on the tradition Gene Siskel and I began in 1975 with "Sneak Previews" on PBS.

Gene and I felt the formula was simplicity itself: Two film critics, sitting across the aisle from each other in a movie balcony, debating the new films of the week. We developed an entirely new concept for TV that has lasted all these years. Few shows have been on the air so long and remained so popular. We made television history, and established the trademarked catch-phrase "Two thumbs up."

The trademark still belongs to me and Marlene Iglitzen, Gene's widow, and the thumbs will return. We are discussing possibilities, and plan to continue the show's tradition.

Roeper, in his own announcement that he was leaving the program, hinted that perhaps his partnership with Ebert may not be over.

Roeper, a Sun-Times columnist who signed on in 2000 after Siskel's 1999 death, said he planned to "proceed elsewhere with my ninth year as the co-host of a movie review show that honors the standards established by Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert more than 30 years ago." He added that he would soon disclose details about such a program.

Roeper didn't immediately return a call for comment Monday.

His statement said he was leaving after failing to agree on a contract extension with Disney-ABC Domestic Television, and that his last appearance will air the weekend of Aug. 16-17.

A Disney spokeswoman didn't immediately return calls for comment on the latest developments as well as whether the show would continue either in its current form or a new one.

Ebert said he is in the dark about any plans for the show, saying Disney hasn't discussed any with him.

"All I know for sure is, the show is not being taken in its current direction," he said in a second e-mail.

did anybody catch any of the who stuff on vh1 over the past week?  i watched the rock honors thing plus a concert from '06 or something on sunday.    sweet jesus i love the who.  what an amazing band.  watching some of those old live clips absolutely blows me away every time.  i can't imagine how cool they must have been to watch live, say 69-72ish.   i saw em in 96 (97?) when they did quadrophenia. then a second set of lots of non-quadro songs.   to this day, one of the best shows i've ever seen, even without moon, and with a fairly subdued pete.  i enjoyed most of the tribute performances too. the lips were great, but i always feel a little cheated (and reminded of stars on 45) when bands do the "medleys" rather than full songs.  they sounded great though. especially sparks/see me feel me.   and i must say, i was super impressed with pearl jam's love reign o'er me. probably the best performance of the night.  i had chills.  there was a clip of entwhistle probably shortly before his death (he looked old) and he said something like, "this is a bass player"  then proceeded to play a little bass line.  "and THIS is a bass guitarist."  then flipped on the distorto and played this mean ass bass solo thing.  i thought of tripp.

(yawn) This coffee isn't working.

I wonder how Bama is doing at her new job.

I wonder what the new direction is that has Ebert and Roeper pulling out of the show. Maybe they drew the line at 2 thumbs way way way up.
