I agree, but only up to a point. If I feel the person I am talking to, or writing to, is in bad faith, that he his trying to trip me up or ridicule me (or being aggressive in general), then I don't feel bound by rules of etiquette. Also, I'm not polite because I hope to change their minds. I try to be polite because that's my behaviour by default.
When I feel the need to vent, I usually do it amidst the converted, on crappity, for instance.
