Speaking of the bored lord, the 1st side of Flecton's new lp sounds real nice.

Forgot to mention earlier, Carolyn Mark's hootenanny last night was awesome. (Kind of a mini-hootenanny, since Jim Bryson, and Hank & Lily weren't on this tour.) It was pretty much 4 or 5 Carolyn songs, then they all switched instruments (Carolyn over to piano, the drummer played mandolin, the guitarist on lap steel, etc.) and did some of Luther Wright's songs, then Jenny Whitely (along with her brother, Dan -- they've been doing bluegrass together for years).

During the break, Carolyn, Jenny and I drank white wine out of a tetra pack thingy in the back alley of the venue (we're classy dames, drinking white wine, obviously) even though I'd been drinking vodka all night, and continued to do so. (Hence uber-hangover today.) The second set was the same thing, but in reverse: Jenny up first, then Luther, then Carolyn. Sooooooooooooooo fun. They're swell folks.

I fell rather like dying.

I have not felt so overwhelmed emotionally in some time.

I feel very, very bad.

A curious sadness which feels a lot like a panic attack.

Well, I know why I am sad. But the sadness is strange.

Speaking of (post-)Archers of Loaf, just saw a listing for Crooked Fingers opening for Okkervil River in October. I wonder if they've stopped being boring yet? I liked the first bunch of records (the S/T one, Bring on the Snakes, Reservoir Songs and Red Devil Dawn) plenty -- oh, who am I kidding, I was obsessed, 'specially after seeing them the first time, and having 'em crash here (lovely dudes) -- but that last record, Dignity & Shame was a yawnfest.

There were maybe two songs on that record that I heard first and really enjoyed. Then I got the whole thing and was like, "Really? That's it?"

Speaking of the bored lord, the 1st side of Flecton's new lp sounds real nice.

I need to track that thing down. I still rock the demos he gave me way back sometimes.

Went into the city last night for dinner at M______'s place and the Taste of Randolph fest with Phineas (former roomie, does the Octophant paintings and photocollages, recently hired to help oversee Playboy.com) and Brenda (her pinups won the Apartments.com contest with y'all's help).

Have we ever talked about Alhambra here? M_____ is the catering boss there. It's insane: a $13 million castle-looking Middle Eastern place  that seats 1300 with decor done up to Vegas levels of excess and glam. I'll attach a pic. Next time one of y'all comes to Chicago, Alhambra will definitely be on the itinerary. They have belly dancers, flamenco, the whole thing.

Anyway, we got to the fest late and only saw two songs by Bobby Bare, Jr. They were damned good, too, so I'm going to have to make an effort to see him again. DBT started slow, with the mooder, ringing tracks off their newest record mixed with mooder, ringing tracks off their older records. Then, after they did "The Living Bubba" it was like all gloves were off. "Three Dimes Down," "The Company I Keep," "Ronnie and Neil," and on and on. Just wall-to-wall ass kicking. The only drag was that the way the sound was, if you didn't already know the words you had no hope of understanding the lyrics.

Still, it was a good time.
