S___ made it to California ok. Her luggage made it a few hours later as usual. So for the next three weeks she's in some lovely mountain home with 5 other women, all artists of one sort or another. She said the grounds are filled with modern art and they have a huge library and over 3,000 movies to choose from.
Also she got the room with the deck which is apparently where all the cats like to convene so yeah, she couldn't be happier.

dragoon got together at 6 last night and went over our set for Bands Not Bombs.  It's kinda true what they say about having a shitty practice before a show.  cause we had shitty practice then a pretty good show. When we got there i ran into many co-workers and friends, all of who came up to me leading off the conversation with "I'm so wasted, man!"  I'm like 'yeah, that's what drinking  from a keg of PBR in the hot sun will do for you.'
But we had fun. Noyel, Navin and Noyel's date helped us load in and out. The show was kind of on the  church playground.  It was quite nice really. kate and Chad were there.
I'm fairly certain we were the oldest guys to play but everyone seemed to  dig it.  Kinda like 'wow! those old guys didn't suck at all the way I thought they would!'
Naw, I kid. It was nice to feel like part of a little event cause you could tell from the giddyness of some of the bands it was their first outdoor event. So cute.

We cut our set short slightly cause Bobby broke a string. but we went from starting with our mellow side (Impatient, Golden Hips, Forgive Forget)  because we followed a kind of jam band that were on the mellow side.  But since a young hardcore band was following we morphed our set into the hard rock and ended with our version of  Trusty's Unsnowplow.

After we were done the guitarist from the next band (while i breathe i hope) came up to me and excitedly pointed out we have the same SUNN head and he seemed amazed i was playing bass through it.  All I could thin to say was "... the sustain, it's like .." (nigel voice)  and he immediately shot back  " you could go and , go and 'ave a bite.."   never fails.

good show. I heard they raised over 7 grand by the time we left.

I ended the evening unceremoniously with 2 bean burritos then zonked out about 11;45.  good times.

I quite enjoyed the show, although, I did find myself missing the intimacy of a Buccaneer gig.  The sound had more room to spread out and lost a little punch in the process.  The sound guys should have picked up on that.  But an enjoyable evening, capped off by installing a window-unit AC at Kate and Sherman's place 'round midnight.  Good times!

My first Quick-Reply.

Turned out to be less than stellar, though one point of interest was the lack of the word "Technotronic".

I remember way back when, I gave Tripp the book The Velvet Underground by Michael Leigh, from whence the band got it's name. Tripp, do you still have that book?

michael leigh is a pensacola boy. we was a writer for the pensacola news journal and also taught english at pensacola junior college. (yup, i'm an alumnus.  nerd)

If I were into standing around outdoors in the middle of June with tons of people rocking out to hours of live music from bands I'd never heard before, I'd so be there.

you've never heard of mission of burma, public enemy, sebadoah, jarvis cocker, spiritualized, spoon, dinasour jr., animal collective, the hold steady, or vampire weekend?

later folks have a spledid weekend

kim

Oh, Evan knows Jarvis Cocker.

I loathe the Hold Steady -- I actually have a visceral response and they make me very angry. I dunno why, especially as there are loads of shitty bands out there that I just ignore (and I'm not the easy-to-anger type to boot). The over-hype, maybe? A friend dragged me to their (sold out) show a couple years ago and I left after 3 songs -- my friend was shocked, as he thinks they're amazing. I can't believe I held out even that long. Ugh.

The rest of it sounds awesome, though. I'd love to see Mission of Burma again.

There are a bunch of recent bands I can't stand because they sound too derivative.  When you've been listening to new music for decades, you usually know enough aboot rock'n'roll to be able to spot the influences.  I don't mind a bit of copying, as it is impossible to be entirely original, but if you appropriate a genre, or a certain style, please make an effort to change it enough to make it your own!  Otherwise, I'd rather listen to the original.  Faithful copying tends to be boring.
