i spent four straight hours regurgitating Western art music history yesterday afternoon for my comprehensive exam, and then i went home and filled up on irish stout and led zeppelin II and then the entire caw family viewed School of Rock.  if you ever find yourself having to take a comprehensive music history exam to obtain a master's degree, i recommend watching that film immediately afterwards.

and get the DVD for all the special features, etc.  i had no idea all of the music for that was recorded at sonic youth's echo canyon studio in NYC, or that jim o'rourke was a music consultant.  there are some great clips of him teaching the kids the parts in the studio in the bonus action.  

and the employment of great songs on the soundtrack during crucial moments was stellar.  if i had a hat, it would be off to the folks who sequenced the snippets.

i don't know.  i answered every question to the best of my ability, and that is all i could do.  i hope it is enough to earn me the MASTER title.

of course my greatest challenge will be next saturday's comprehensive music theory exam.  i'm feeling diminished just thinking aboot it.

there's no acknowledgement of good vibes in music theory.  the theorists don't actually like to deal with sound.  it's all aboot what's scribbled on the page, or scribbling aboot what is scribbled on the page and explicating it using arcane symbols and codes.  

i'm perpetuating a stereotype, of course.
