somebody just lent me the grey album for the ride home.

Have never heard Jay-z's black album...the white album is my all time favorite...it's my desert island disc...the only one i'd need. Which the guy said might not be a good thing...said i might not like it then.

we'll see.

if you love the white album... you probably won't love the grey album... I was looking forward to something really cool when i read: "Every kick, snare, and chord is taken from the Beatles White Album and is in their original recording somewhere...," but when I finally heard the damn thing it wasn't as clever as i imagined it would be. The samples are huge 'n' chunky. I thought i'd have to search through the WA to find where the samples came from...these are about as subtle as the proverbial flying mallet.

but that's just my opinion.

I actually really, really enjoyed The Grey Album.

I thought the sample pairings for the most part worked really well thematically. The sort of mythic status of these recognizable songs amplified and clarified the career-defining nature of Jay-Z's rhymes on the record.

And, you could argue, by deftly combining the Beatles career-defining statement with Jay-Z's, Dangermouse has effectively made the greatest mashup album of all time, a career-defining statement in its own right.

Really, I enjoyed the hell out of The Grey Album. It's in regular rotation in my house.

If you enjoy the album, good on you. It's hard enough to find something you like without someone else pointing out why you shouldn't like it. There are certainly (much) worse things out there than dangermouse's ouevre.

My only realy disagreement with you would be the adverb "deftly." I give him a B+ for concept (yeah, I know that Jay-Z's album is called "the black album," but is it really the best choice for this mashup?) and a B- for execution.

But  rather than argue the point today, I have a suggestion: why don't we have this discussion in about 6 months or so, after the initial buzz has worn off? That way, you won't have to defend it to idiots like me while you're still enjoying it in regular rotation, and my knee-jerk contrariness will have had time to wear off.

By the way, I know I'm an idiot because the heaviest rotation on my iPod (for the past 2 months) is the album Bacon by the Japanese high school girl rap duo Halcali. And I will defend my taste vehemently.

In spite of my concerted efforts and my endless attempts at enjoying it, in the name of fairness and of being open minded and "cool", I've never been able to truly get rap, hip hop and most so called "urban music" (you know, house, r'n'b, that kind of stuff).  There are some things I like (I still like DeLaSoul's Three Feet High and Rising, and Basehead's Play With Toys, some Public Enemy (boy, I'm old), but most of that music bores me...  I've never paid much attention to words in songs, so rapping doesn't work for me if there's no interesting music, just old school beats on top of a guy rhyming is, to me, booooring!   Specially if is droning about how tough he his and how life in the 'hood is hard.  And I find live hip hop shows, all samples and no instruments, rather boring events... I used to think I was too white or something, but I don't think that's it: I love old seventies funk and old r'n'b...  And Prince still rules my world, I grew up on his music.  I should get it, but I don't.  I am not cool, I guess...

well i got through the first 3 songs...i have to tell  you i didn't dig it until the end of song three...i guess it's the glass onion sample...the second part. I guess maybe because i've never heard the black album...i dig the jayz unplugged album...it's cool to hear how they make all the beats with live instruments.

I've never been into the whole hip-hop thing myself...though chronic 2000 was in heavy rotation when it came out..."what do you think i sold them all?" and the first time i heard snoop on dre day i was amazed. the relaxed rhyme style. Oh i like a couple of biggie tunes...hypnotize...and that one with the him and puffy and mace or should i say Reverand Mace.

Never got into Eminem...loved the beastie's licence to ill...think i was junior when that came out...but never ventured on to paul's boutique which i hear is better.
