Did I do that one already? ganesha song titles should make for good "topics". I have often found that y'all are quite good at creating ganesha song titles with your topics.
Tomorrow:
The Bears Were Born To Be Artists
(our worst song ever...which is saying a lot)
(I still like the reference, which I pulled from a conversation I saw on television where a gypsy was defending their use of dancing bears)

I have to admit that I never got into the Violent Femmes. The music is almost hand-crafted for me to enjoy (very much my style) and yet I cannot get past the fact that I find the BAND themselves obnoxious/irritating. I cannot think of any other similar cases to this particular clash of personalities (mine and theirs).
I still can't past Victor DeLorenzo's
Pancake Day
, easily one of the most cringe-inducing piles of shit I have ever heard. I believe it was after my review of that album that the record label complained and threatened to withdraw its relationship with the college paper. My editor informed me they cited one of my articles specifically, but I am not 100% certain it was the DeLorenzo.
Nah...it probably was. Oh wait...maybe it was 22 Brides. <<shudder>>
I have tried to get into Violent Femmes many times...I simply cannot manage to shake my dislike of the band members.

I should probably get going.
But everyone should make me a list of their favourite records that I should check oot.
Savannah (or Jeff's former girlfriend) should make me a mix tape of Violent Femmes.

Mostly, with the Femmes it's about the first record. Here's a link to the remastered edition of that one:
(link moved to Hey I Wanna Play You Something)
There's some good songs scattered off the next three which you can get off the "best of"
Add It Up
:
(Hey I Wanna Play You Something)
If you want another full album,
Why Do Birds Sing?
is pretty good, but I don't have a link for that.
The next one,
New Times
was so bad that most people gave up and quit listening, and I've seen nothing in the reviews of the couple since then to suggest that I am missing out.

That 1st Violent Femmes album came out the year after I got outta high school. I listened to it tons. I also dug their 2nd. Didn't much like the 3rd one. I listened to the first JMC album quite a bit. I had a really good stereo in my car at the time complete with those little tweeters in the front. I used to blast that wall of feedback, grit my teeth and rock out to the catchy songs underneath all that screeching. When you're in your early 20s and never heard the likes of anything similar before, it's pretty exciting stuff.

Other 80s stuff I remember getting into was side 2 of Let's Active's first album, Husker Du's Flip Your Wig and New Day Rising, The first couple of Meat Puppets albums, The Replacements. I also discovered 70s Bristish punk in the 80s. I was all over that shit. The Buzzcocks, The Jam, The Clash. Didn't hear it all til the early 80s.

I spent the afternoon
finally
doing another coat of (red) paint in my room... like, a year-and-a-half (or two years) after the original not-good-enough coverage job. And drinking vinho verde.
Duh.
Painting soundtrack: Mission of Burma (S/T), then Devo ('74-'79 stuff Matt sent me), then Roxy Music ("For Your Pleasure").

Songs I have to listen to over and over and over and over and over again at work:
http://snipurl.com/29emf
http://snipurl.com/29emb
http://snipurl.com/29emn
http://www.youtube.com/v/m-jRHI3INyg
http://snipurl.com/29en5
http://snipurl.com/29enj
http://snipurl.com/29ent
Eight weeks listening to this shit and I had no idea this was Madonna and Justin Timberlake until this morning when the fucktard dj prattled on about it for 20 minutes
http://www.youtube.com/v/1h5HMnR69vQ
The politics of the lyrics are...wow.
http://www.youtube.com/v/Xr11P5xNaM0
http://snipurl.com/29ent
http://snipurl.com/29eot
THIS is the kind of radio shit that puts me off more than any other kind of music.
http://snipurl.com/29eox
@$@$#@$@#$@# THIS SONG IS GOING TO MAKE ME KILL SOME ONE
http://snipurl.com/29ep5
http://snipurl.com/29ep9
http://snipurl.com/29epc
This must be one of the rare ones I can actually block out...but the video has me wondering...is this the end result of a reality tv/game show of some sort?
http://snipurl.com/29epk
http://snipurl.com/29epp
the guy songs/videos are always worse...who not only doesn't beg for the song but actually puts up with, and not only that, but kinda enjoys it and then actually buys it? The image in my head is office secretaries caught in traffic on the way home in the burbs singing along to these heroically romantic rock-love songs that seem feel as if they were precision-crafted for the closing credits of the week's a-classic-Marvel-character-becomes-a-cookie-cuttered-pile-of-shit-movie.
http://snipurl.com/29epu
http://snipurl.com/29eq8
eep
http://snipurl.com/29eqd
...
damnit, I was hoping to find/identify those one or two songs that are really wearing me down.

another one I block easily
http://snipurl.com/29eri
wow...sounds like one of those dude songs...but with a chick
http://snipurl.com/29erq
and then songs like this I simply fail to locate the hook...the music barely exists - is the hook the lyrics?
http://snipurl.com/29erw
I skipped ahead...and
I found the one that pisses me off more than any other
:
Alicia Keys is the guilty party:
http://snipurl.com/29esl
It's that fucking CRASH CYMBAL on the beats of her warble:
NO ONE, NO ONE (PSSSSH!) NO-HO-O-ON (PSSH!) NNEE!
CAN GET IN THE WAY (PSSH!) OF WHAT I AM FEE (PSSH!)(PSSH!)(PSSH!)-LING!
It sounds as if they let a five year old in the studio and asked, "What do you want to add to lady's song?"
"All I need is a crash cymbal and one drum stick."
When it is one all I can hear is this woman screaming/warbling,
"NO ONE, NO ONE, NO ONNNNNNnn
nennnEEENnnneee
nenNE"
and (PSSH!) (PSSH!) (PSSH!)
