these guys are kinda embarrassingly meathead-ish, but at the same time they are on the right team, so i cut em a little slack. i really just wanted to see if anybody else saw the mccain interview with o'reilly in which he was asked to respond to arrianna huffington's assertion that he had told her he didn't vote for bush in 2000.

Central!

When I was in college, I worked at Pig N' Whistle in Bartlett. And the Assistant Manager there was a really nice guy named Craig. He was buried in debt and in default on his student loans, but he still spent what little free time and money he had working with barbecue teams and talking about how one day he'd own his own place. Fast forward a few years and there's a new bbq place in Memphis catering a wedding I was at and it was called Central. It was pretty good. So then after I got back, I was flipping through the channels and Food Network had a thing on Memphis bbq that was going to feature Central. I went to watch it and lo and behold, they were at Central where the owner was showing how to make his dry rub. And the owner of Central BBQ is my old boss, Craig Blondis. Nice guy. I'm glad things turned out for him.

I don't know how good of a story that really is, I guess, but having been a restaurant biz schlub who dreamed of more, it sure warmed my heart that Craig came out on top.

Elizabeth Blondis is the name on the order I'm working on (for central BBQ)  (hence the free lunch today)

Craig Blondis apparently knows me from a party we both attented 10 years ago or so.  He always speaks to me when I go in there (it's literally a block away from my house) and I always play along.  He asked last time how long it had been since we met and I feigned trying to remember, then he says something about "we were at charlie's mom's and betsy was there and, man, that was a long time ago!"  It's not a very good story, but it's strange that I have kept up this charade for the last 4 or 5 years.  I know Betsy and Charlie and I have spent many nights at their Mom's house since high school, but I have no recollection of ever being in the same place as Craig in a social setting....

Christ. My father, who is retired, went to a work reunion dinner tonight and afterwards a woman (also retired and a close friend of my dad's for decades) who had to leave early called him and asked for him to call her when he got home. When he did she informed him that her daughter's family never showed (their arrival was the reason for her early departure) and that the reason was that her teen-aged granddaughter was plucked off the Toronto streets last night while waiting for a bus and then drugged and raped and then left somewhere. She is now in hospital.

Fucking nasty shit!  God damn!  I've read about these kinds of thing happening in the newspapers, but I can never get over the realisation that they truly happen, for real, to real people.  It's not some kind of distant event above which I can safely hover.
