Just got a nice email from a friend about one of my stories (the lesbian s&m road story!):

We're going to use Tia Goes Pop for May's edition of our Flash Fiction on killerworks.com!! Yay!! You'll get a whopping 5$ and a copy of the anthology. What I'd like from you before we post it is a short bio to go with it.  And any weblinks etc... you may want to go with it.

I think that's more than I got paid when it was published the first time in a literary journal, so...

But a bio? Fuck, I hate writing those things. I'll just give 'em the crappity link and they can figure me out from there. (  Undecided )

My first purchase was a cassette of Duran Duran's "Seven and the Ragged Tiger." I was seven. Virtually all of my early music purchases were dictated by MTV. I did at least, over time, gravitate toward the cooler stuff on early MTV--The Clash, Talking Heads, etc.

Got the Combat Rock on right now.

How is the Mescaleros stuff? I never got around to it.

The actual story of my musical tastes as a youth goes like this. My parents were devoted easy-AM listeners and for the first six or so years of my life, I heard nothing more rocking than the Grease soundtrack. Tons of Donnie & Marie, Kenny Rogers, etc.

When we first got cable, I heard about MTV from the other kids at school. When I turned it on, they were playing "Twilight Zone" by Golden Earring, a cheesy fake noir video which ends with S&M bikini wearing chicks mock torturing/interrogating some dude tied to a chair. It creeped the hell out of me. I turned the tv off and just sat there for about ten minutes. When I turned it back on, they were playing "Rock the Casbah" by the Clash and I can remember very clearly thinking "This is the coolest thing I have ever heard."

I probably watched MTV between 2 and four hours a day for the next eight years.

wow, all this record talk has been really interesting reading.  Thanks for sharing.  You understand I shared a lot of my ick alblums...i also liked listening to the old fm style radio shows that dont exist anymore to find music, dr. demento.  I would say radio, mtv and tv drove my tastes until i went to college.  I also spent a lot of time listening to records early in life

off the subject but a poll question?  what is the price of gas in your city?  please state price and city if you wish.

The high price of gas was predictable.  A few years ago, when Evan was thinking of buying a new car, I remember telling him to buy a smaller, fuel efficient, Japanese made car, because I was quite certain that the days of cheap gas were going to be over soon.  People have been talking about peak oil for years!

Incredible that we are your greatest supplier of crude yet pay more for our own oil.

I forgot yesterday about one of my sister's biggest contributions to my development as a music lover...

Led Zeppelin.

My 9th grade year of high school was her senior year (80-81) and I used to ride to school with her in her stylin' white Opel GT
and among the 8-tracks we used to rock were AC/DC Back In Black, REO Speedwagon (ugh), Journey (I liked em at the time)
and Houses of the Holy by Zep which was a huge revelation to me because before that I felt that Zep was the terrain of hardcore freaks and ruffians (of which there were many MANY at Raleigh-Egypt) but the first time I heard Song Remains The Same I 'got it'.  And I still rock that album whenever I can.

Yeah, mostly the oil companies. While peak oil is inevitable, I wonder how honest their assessments have been.
