i was just aboot to ask if tripp (or any of y'all) had ever read Jim Thompson's "Bad Boy," and when i went looking for some internet data on it i quickly discovered one of those nerd clusters that make me feel like a pretty regular guy.

sheesh!

the book is entertaining if you have ever read any of thompson's novels and you wonder what sort of screwed up childhood he must have had.

Actually that's one of my favorite ones. THAT and Roughneck which is kind of a sequel autobio.,

So, you found an enclave of Jim THompson freaks?

Crappin you Negative came from a Jim Thompson book ( I think pop1280 ) although in the book I think he says Crappin you negatory. Then someone pointed out it's usage in Raising Arizona so we changed it. I like to think that the Coen Bros got it from Jim Thompson as well.

Considering the Coen Bros' almost incessant references to hard-boiled fiction, I'd say you're probably right.

"Raising Arizona" isn't exactly my favorite Coen movie, so I haven't seen it enough to be 100%, but I thought they said "negative" as well (web search shows results both ways)...I had just always assumed the expression was something of a southernism.

Ain't My Lookout came from an issue of Jim by Jim Woodring.

Really?  Vol. 2?  Y'know, I vaguely think I remember that...maybe.

uuuuh, I don't remember the exact issue but it was the story in which a girl  tells him to swim out to this raft in the middle of a river and then knock the old man off of it. When he gets out there he looks back and the girl is telling another man to swim out there and knock Jim off. To which the new guy replies "Ain't my lookout". Which I took to mean "not my problem". I seem to remember me and Scott used to use the expression thusly prior to naming the record.
