From the John Carpenter movie, They Live, in which Rowdy Roddy Piper plays a nameless everyman in a near-future LA in deep economic depression. He finds out that it's all the result of mind control signals broadcast by ghoulish alien overlords masquerading as the world's rich and powerful. Both the overlords and their messages can be revealed by use of special sunglasses.

It's the movie with the infamous 5+ minute fistfight between two guys in front of a dumpster. (Five minutes may not sound like a long time, but imagine you're at the theater and Roddy Piper and Keith David start fistfighting in an alley, you close your eyes and count to 300 and open them and they are still going.) South Park aped it shot for shot in one episode.
