Nulla Dies Sine Linea

I'm waiting for the Dragoon cd.  I'm sorry, but I'm a bit of a fetishist regarding music: if it ain't on vinyl or cd, it doesn't exist.

Honestly, to me: physical media is dead. Even when my closest friends make records I love, I take the disc, admire its artwork for about ten seconds, flip idly through the booklet, then rip it straight to MP3, put the disc on a shelf and never ever look at it again.

What matters to me is the music. The cardboard and plastic are just stuff that take up space.

I realize how much this may horrify the folks who lovingly buff their vinyl and pore over every inch of a CD booklet or record sleeve, but I just don't worry much about that stuff.

My music fetishism probably comes in the overly meticulous way I rip, tag, sort, and store everything.

I like looking at my cd collection, contemplate the the first editions, the rare stuff, and the autographed records.  I know:  loser.  And I also like to look at the art, read the lyrics and the thank you notes.  I still remember a time when all I knew about my favourite musicians was what they decided to print on their records...  Besides, dowloading is way too easy, it makes music seem too impermanent.  I own an ipod (80 G model), but it's mostly filled up with stuff from my record collection.  I usually download to decide if a certain record is worth buying.

I have always enjoyed reading whatever jibberish/liner notes a band has included with a record/cd. None have been more endearing to me than those of our beloved Grifters, written by our own Tripp. It absolutely influenced me to write stuff in my own band's releases, instead of opting for the totally boring "less is more" packaging favored by so many bands that are too cool for school. I have an old Pavement 10 inch, "Perfect Sound Forever", and the 7 inch "Demolition Plot J7" and the included pages written by Mr. Malkmus are high comedy, indeed.

But by the same token, if the music don't hit, the rest ain't shit.  Afro

I will say this for liner notes, though: to this day, when people ask me what kind of music I like, I tell them I like songs about girls, liquor, and the solar system.

These days, the excitement I used to feel learning about a band via liner notes is dampened by how much more info is on the net.

All my talk about proTools was meant to show you that you can use your computer and still be completely low-tech/lo-fi.

also, it's great for arranging songs..

If the Grifters' liner notes hadn't been so cool & friendly, I probably never would've had the guts to post on this board to begin with.
