Rosa Stone? WTF, man?!
There's no device that can translate drunk to English.

ok, it's unfair of me to say that line means "less like tripp". What he meant was he was having a hard time adapting my song and I think what happened was Jeff (Buckley) advised dave to 'make it his'.
But still that line burned me up.
and the thing is... it still sounds exactly like what I wrote. He didn't 'turn anything around'.

Tripp, Covered in Flies is yours? Cool! That's one of my fav Grifters songs. Are the lyrics all yours?

lyrics by dave but yeah, 98% of the music in covered with flies is me.
Dave made up the guitar line that is the first thing you hear. The rest of it is all me baby.

i think "holmes" and "covered with flies" would make excellent dragoon songs. ("coat of silence" would too, btw. would like to hear how bobby would animate those lyrics, some of my favorite of all grifters lyrics)
also, maybe it's a stupid question (because it seems obvious to me) but the line in "contact me now" that goes "i turned the song around and made it sound more like it came from me" is about ripping off deep purple, right?
Good luck getting Tripp to accept praise for the Coat of Silence lyrics (also some of my faves - works on two levels: hilarious and bitter angry).

I practically need a Rosa Stone to figure it out.
i got cum in my hair.
Will Oldham reference? Talking about Will Oldham: every time I try to watch Matewan something goes wrong. 10 years ago, my video player couldn't read the tape. Two days ago, my DVD player kept skipping. I blame the Bush administration.

the only lyrics I ever wrote for the grifters were in Coat of Silence.
i wrote
if we wait for others to remember then the days could pass like years
if we wait for others to recall there'll be no-one left to hear.
I don't think I ever wrote anything else lyric-wise.
I use to help edit though. I'd say 'use this word instead of this word'
but I didn't even do that very much. for the most part I was always
very pleased with the band's lyrical output.

....
if anything I was ripping off AC/DC
that line was the cause of a major fight between me and dave. That song is pretty much all mine except for lyrics and dave wrote the one part in the middle of the song that leads into 'picture you calling me.."
well dave kept changing my arrangement and doing what he constantly did at the time which is take my stuff, mellow it out, make it sound like Bastard Souls, and essentially suck everything that was fun out of it.
I had to FIGHT to keep my arrangement which I didn't appreciate at all. And then on top of that he throws that bullshit line in at the beginning of the song which essentially means 'turn the song around and make it sound more like it came from me' i.e., make it sound less like tripp's song. there's no need for that line cause right after it the 'story' begins. It's just something he threw in to get under my skin and it worked.
whoa. i was WAAAAY off. the opening riff sounds like a slowed down minor version of the "smoke on the water" riff. and i figured that lyric was an homage to that. i'd much rather hear the ac/dc version of the song, though. i gotta say that's a pretty petty thing to do on dave's part. weaselish.

I love the music and I love the lyrics. When you guys had it together, you really had it together. Too bad it doesn't work anymore.
