when I was a kid I used to sit in this one chair in our living room and beat it with drum sticks constantly while watching tv. The arm of the chair had a more pleasant feel than one of those rubber drum pads. Eventually you're just walking around the house playing drums on everything. BOB use to have jams in the kitchen with someone beating the steel sink like a bongo while someone else played the glasses or tupperware. good times. I still play the sink.

Our dryer quit working tonight. Luckily, our nextdoor neighbors are really nice and are letting us use theirs.
Broken dryer - what a drag.

when you're drumming there are many ways to er, hold your sticks. Go find some footage of gene krupa or buddy rich playing drums and they hold it 'jazz style' (yeah, I'm a real expert). In which your palms are kinda facing upwards and you're holding the sticks with your thumbs and index finger and the sticks are sorta resting across your palm, so you're holding them loosely. This gives you a lot of bounce.
the rock method is more like you would imagine, gripping the sticks like hammers.
THAT way your forearms do a lot of work. While not the most ergonomic way to play it as absolutely the most fun way (for me). The jazz way your wrists are doing a lot of the work.
having said all that every jazz drummer I ever met or played with were vastly superior musicians to straight-up rock drummers.
Agree with all of this. Have been trying to switch my grips of late, my arms are suffering and my snare is beaten to hell (actually, after breaking about a dozen sticks in two and a half weeks, I actually broke my BEATER the other night. I have replaced beaters before because the padding wore off most, leaving a 'squarish' end, but this time the steel actually broke in two and half of the thing with the beater at the end went flying and my bass drum went silent). It hurts the wrist and forearms more than is necessary, even though it will get you louder faster. The jazz hands (?) take more work, but I wish I had taken the time to start off that way. I would work up the wrist strength and loud will be no problem. Starting off with snare exercises seems ideal. This, again, is something I have been trying to work on recently (except from variations I now know, not from actual exercises - so I will likely never learn).
Rock hands vs. Jazz hands is like a Slap shot vs. a Wrist shot:
the former are easier and immediately powerful, the latter grant you more control and technical aptitude.

I could watch that kind of shit all day long! I remember the first time I saw Buddy Rich on the Tonight Show. I couldn't figure out how he was playing holding his sticks like that. I do remember looking at the TV, then back at my folks, then back at the TV again; to make sure I wasn't the only one seeing this display. Just awesome. I will have to come down on the side of Buddy Rich, if for no other reason than I am more familiar with his work.

in middle school, (sixth and seventh grade) i played drums for the Workman Middle School Band. pretty much second chair for two years straight. we were only allowed to employ the "jazz" technique. i was actually pretty good. granted, it was just a snare drum, lots of flam/tappin and short rolls. learning different time signatures and whatnot. by eighth grade, i gave up drums for a guitar. probably a bad move, as i probably would've been a good drummer, had i stuck with it. and i haven't gotten any better on guitar in years. every once in a while, i'll get behind a kit and start playing. i still hold the left stick "jazz style". i'm not bad, but my problem is, since i never had a kit, just the snare, i never developed any foot coordination. i can wail away on the toms and snare, and sound alright, but as soon as i try to keep a beat with the bass drum or hi hat, it becomes a train wreck. i always kept time with my heel, rather than my toes, and for some reason, i can't do it the other way. do they make drum pedals that rely on the heel for power rather than toes? if so, i should invest. i've always regretted giving up the drums. i've got beats running through my head all day long.

used to drive my mom up the fricking wall. and i hated that stupid drum pad. i guess it worked as a mute, but it was like a shock absorber. nothing like the feel of a skin. i never had enough friends at the time to have any "BOBlike" jam sessions, but i certainly made the most out of any drummable surface....
