I'm sure you saw this.

Did you know Leonardo was employed by Cesare Borgia, the notorious son of Pope Alexander VI and the inspiration for Machiavelli's The Prince?

Oh, and Leonardo is alleged to have been a Grand Master of the Priory of Sion, the keepers of the secret of Christ's bloodline. If it was such a big secret, why'd he put it in a painting?

Dan Brown writes for morons and J.K. Rawling writes for kids.  I know, I know, I'm juts pointing the bleeding obvious, but it seems to me that these two points deserve to be emphasised, as it seems that they both have been submerged in a sea of hype.

Sorry, was that grouchy?

Not any grouchier than your other posts.

It's true to a point. I don't know that J.K. Rawling writes specifically for kids. Lots of adults have read all those Harry P. books.

I tried to read that Dan Brown book a few years back. I think it took about 20-30 pages for me to realize how horrible it was.

Believe me, J.K. Rawling writes for kids.  That, or she writes for easily entertained adults who don't know any better.

I live with an 11 year old (almost 12 now) who adores Harry  Potter.  Tried to give it a try just to see why, but it's really not my cup of tea.  I found it to  be formulaic and badly written.  I think that the world she builds is not very believable (too many plot holes and unexplained bits and pieces), and that's the whole point with these kinds of books.  Also, one thing I tend to dislike about many books with magic is their tendency to appeal to deus ex machina style denouements.  The Potter books uses it and abuses this old, tired and quite arbitrary plot device.  I can understand why they would be fun if you're a kid, but it's silly stuff if you're used to better.

If you need a bit of evasion into magic, the EarthSea cycle, by Ursula K. Le Guin, threads in the same territory and is much better.

Also, that Philip Pullman trilogy is really good. I'd say they're written for young adults (not sure how old young adults are).

That is a clear demonstration that de-evolution is a reality.
