Did you notice the myspace URL? "spencerkrug" It is another band connected to Wolf Parade (Spencer Krug is the vocalist) and Frog Eyes, which is why it sounds sort of like 'em. I have only heard "Shut Up, I Am Dreaming", but it basically sounds like Wolf Parade without guitars and new wave-synthy keyboards.
I burned out quickly on the whole Wolf Parade/Frog Eyes thing. Mostly because Frog Eyes seemed to rerecord the same one song over and over again for their first four albums (when I stopped listening: Ego Scriptor - when acoustic failed to change the situation, I knew they had run their course), and Wolf Parade's album, while good, was not as exciting as the original demos that made the rounds in Montreal.
Everyone wailed on about "Shut Up, I Am Dreaming" being one of the best albums of 2006 and it just sounded like more of the same. They should have restrained themselves like Arcade Fire (imagine, I used the word "restrained" in reference to Arcade Fire).

thanks for the info matt. i know very little about wolf parade/frog eyes/etc. didn't get the connection, as i haven't really heard much from either of those bands. (shows what a difference locale makes as far as the music that gets shoved down your thought on a daily basis- i.e. against me! from gainesville has been everybody's darling around here for years.) a friend of mine kinda turned me on to sunset rubdown. i just realized they are a product of montreal. i know what it is i like about them, but i also know what's missing. namely, guitars.

I am listening to Tom Waits'
Blood Money
(which I downloaded, like most post-Mule Variations albums that I did not take out from the library), and as much as I love Waits, I cannot help but feel that 98% of his music since "The Black Rider" has been retreads of his older tunes. The lyrics are still strong, but it is rehashing bordering on self-parody sometimes.
And yet the sincerity he lends to the ballads seems to suggest that he is as into this stuff as he was "Frank's Wild Years" (which was blasted on the way down to the Adirondacks).
He rode so high in that decade between Swordfishtrombones to the Black Rider. There is plenty of strays that fall outside of that window (and an entire album: "Small Change"), like some of the demos that appear on the Early Years comps. While the songs are weak, the riffing from the live set of "Nighthawks At The Diner" are great, but I could do without almost everything from Closing Time (except "Lonely")/The Heart of Saturday Night/Foreign Affairs/Blue Valentine (except "Red Shoes By The Drugstore"/Heatattack & Vine (except "Heatattack & Vine", "In Shades" & "Ruby's Arms")/One From The Heart ...
Mule Variations & Blood Money have their good songs (as well as a heap of dull ballads). But "Real Gone" only had
Hoist That Rag
and if I remember correctly, "Alice" was a total misfire save for some fun on "Kommienezuspadt" (I took it out again, and I shall see).
Love ballads with clever lyrics and simple tunes have always plagued Waits' albums, but between 1983 and 1993 they sounded like "Cold Cold Ground" and "Time" and "Innocent When You Dream" etc.
"Small Change" was the first album I heard of Waits' and I still feel it was the first signal of how talented he was beyond the beatnik barfly balladeer schtick of his early albums.
Well, he never lost his cool cred, even if he sometimes sounds less comfortable in his "role".
And Brawlers was quite refreshing.

Matt already covered the essentials. You really should listen to Wolf Parade: Apologies to the Queen Mary is a pretty good record. I like them better than Sunset Rubdown 'cause they've got guitars. I got burned on Frog Eyes too. I have two of their records, and I don't feel the need to buy anything else: as Matt mentioned, they pretty much only play one song, although it's a good song.

i could use a neckbone rubdown, to be exact. i can rub the other parts just fine.
do demos actually make the rounds in montreal? are they left at bus stops and in cafes?
