I think Spidey 3 was the Gerry Conway/Ross Andru movie. But the studio made Sam Raimi put in Venom and fucked it all up.

first movie = steve ditko era (early 60's, first incarnation of spider-man) with some blending of mythos
second movie = gil kane/john romita era (highest echelon of comic art IMHO) (witness: the scooter,
the babes abound, spidey 'no more' with the garbage can scene)
third movie = Ross Andru era ( amnesia, MJ is less of a fun girl, the 'new goblin' reminded me of Rocket Racer a little bit.
BUT Sandman did first appear in issue # 3 way back in 62 or 63. And the inclusion of Gwen and the jazz bar scene is kind of a throwback to john romita days.
so all in all I think Sam Raimi and co did an excellent job of distilling the whole mythos, including themes and images from all eras of spidey pretty much seamlessly.
And it ends with friggin VENOM which heralded the beginning of the end as far as I'm concerned so it's poetic almost. ...
which means Spidey 4 will be directed by joel Schumacher and it will guest-star Spawn.
