Dragoon continues it's recording surge and our drum recording techniques continue to evolve in wonderful ways. We're getting some really good drums and all the Stan fans will be happy to know that this record will feature some of the wildest stan-fills ever performed. Also, I have some pretty crazy distorto-harmonics happening in several songs.

stan-fills are one of the great pleasures of the modern world.  seriously.  going all the way back to songs like 'want'. even if it's just a simple "flam, tap!", stan could always fill the void seamlessly. a thinking man's dan peters..

also, new songs by the lips and wolfmother.  not sure what i think about the lips song. it's got a spooner oldham-esque keyboard thing going on that sounds a little out of place.  haven't heard the wolfmother song.

how was the trans am show, matthew?

I really enjoyed it...Jer claims he did as well (though the number of times he has mentioned how much he did now has me doubting his sincerity)... nice to see a band with a sense of humour for a change...nice to be a smaller venue for again (though it was quite packed)...most interesting was the fact that, though I had not listened to Trans Am since around 1996-1997 and the last little while after Dan burned me a bunch of MP3s to disc, and the morning of the show I began downloading their new one (so I heard the first bunch of songs) I knew virtually every song they played...they pretty much played the set list I would have asked for.

It was a pretty good show.  I had the impression that the Trans Am folks were being cautious.  They didn't took any risks, and they pretty much played the older material that they know would work.  I think the fact that the TA and Liberation records were a bit of a let down for many fans made an impression.  Their live set only had one song from those records.  And they didn't play a lot of songs from the new one, even though the new record is pretty good, a return to form.  They positively sounded apologetic when they played the new songs. At times, during the show, I had the impression that they were wondering if they still had it.   I think they still do!

The liner notes on the new record made me realise how insular this kind of music can be: they recorded at the Ocropolis (Oneida's NY studio), they tank Oneida, they thank HDU (an excellent New Zealand rock band) and Paul Crowther (the maker of the Crowther Hotcake and other guitar pedals).  HDU and Oneida are two of my current favourite bands, and the Crowther Hotcake is my main distortion pedal.
