Boy, there's no more privacy, is there?  The only defence against snoops is anonymity.

For the last couple of hours I have been somewhat fasinated by an ad for the Thomas Kinkade Faith Mountain flyer we got in the mail. I was disgusted that followers of an ascetic who is said to have said that, to be pious one must sell one''s possessions and give to the poor (and you get pie in the sky when you die), should be blowing $19.99 on some useless (even it does "light up") piece of shit like this.

It looked like that crap that you in see in dollar stores...so I assumed that the price I was looking at was the sale price. Looking at it again I noticed, "$19.99 shipping and service". I flipped over the card and see "A great value. Order today! This exclusive edition is yours for only $199.99, payable in five easy installments of just $39.99" (which is "only" $199.95, but that's splitting hairs) ...

christ almighty.

I love that claim (which are the last words on the card,  and appear under the close up of ultra-white-not-at-all-Middle-Easterny Jesus on his knees lugging the cross):

"With each sculpted scene,
you can almost feel Jesus'
love, faith and strength

"

Almost.

Bill Moyers returns to PBS with "Buying the War"

In the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq, the government's claims about weapons of mass destruction and terrorist ties to Saddam Hussein went mostly unchallenged by the media. Four years after "shock and awe," how the government sold the war has been much examined, but a big question remains: how and why did the press buy it? Bill Moyers and his team piece together the reporting that shows how the media were complicit in shaping the "public mind" toward the war, and ask what's happened to the press' role as skeptical "watchdog" over government power. The program features the work of some intrepid journalists who didn't take the government's word at face value, including the team of reporters at Knight Ridder news service whose reporting turned up evidence at odds with the official view of reality. "Buying the War" includes interviews with Dan Rather, formerly of CBS; Tim Russert of "Meet the Press"; Bob Simon of "60 Minutes"; Walter Pincus of the Washington Post; Walter Isaacson, then president of CNN; editor at large of The New Republic and author Peter Beinart; and talk show host Phil Donahue. Noted media critics Eric Boehlert and Michael Massing are also interviewed.
