Here's a little useless grifters trivia for you....

early on in our lil career and just as the Pavement comparisons began we did an interview in which we
were each asked what was the first record we ever bought.
Mine, embarrasingly, was The Joker's Wild by Steve Miller. I thought there was a Batman connection and when i got home and put it on I hated it and I still do as a matter of fact.

BUT Stan's answer was Convoy by CW McCall (?)

So the interview comes out and at practically the same time an interview comes out with pavement in which they were asked the same question and guess what Malkmus' first record was?

Convoy.

Question of the day:

What was the first record (45 or LP)  (or cd or cassette) that you ever bought with your own money?

Aside from the Joker's Wild, which was like, 1st grade for me, the first real investment I made vinyl-wise was Wings Over America. Which, at three discs, was  a pricey venture for a 4th grader.

For some reason I really wanted to hear Convoy. I got Joey to put it on a cd he was making for me. It is so weird b/c after that the song was EVERYWHERE. I heard it on tv and then I was watching Detroit Rock City and there it was again. Then I flipped around on TV and the movie, Convoy, was on...........

musta been 7 or 8  (81-82ish?    second grade?)   took this thing to school with me to play on the portable record player in my mom's classroom  while i waited for her to get off so we could go home. (my mom was a teacher at my elementary school)  this and michael jackson's off the wall.  but i didn't  pay for off the wall.  i paid for freeze frame.   i used to get the biggest kick out of "piss on the wall".

this is the kind of "inherent clairvoyance" i was talking to matt about a few days ago. this kind of weird shit happens to me all the time.

Synchronicities are little signs from the universe that you're on the right track.

On the right track to WHAT I do not know. But pay attention when it starts getting weird.
