My mother was Googling for information/pics/etc. for a Rainforest segment for her first grade class and she came across this page and, at first it looks like your average children's science page type deal, but as she moved through the information she came across passages like this which start off rather innocuous but radically change tone by their conclusion (remember that it is for KIDS!):

“The jacana has most remarkable feet. It has very long spreading toes which are exceptionally slender and weak. At first glance it would seem that Nature erred in giving this creature such freakish equipment, but she didn't. The jacana spends most of its life stepping from one floating lily pad to another in search of food. Its outlandish feet distribute its weight evenly over the wide surface of the pads, enabling them to support the bird.”

In all seriousness, HOW could a bird with short stubby feet EVER develop the long, slender feet and spreading toes necessary to walk on lily pads? Every time a bird with short stubby feet tried to walk on a lily pad, it would sink, and the poor thing would die of frustration in less than a week - if it did not drown before that!

And so the jacana, unintentionally, becomes another witness for God and divine creation, for it is clear to all that the feet off the jacana HAD to be as they are, from the very beginning, in order to do what the jacana does - walk on lily pads. FEET ANY LESS THAN OR ANY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT THE JACANA HAS WOULD NOT WORK AS THE JACANA USES THEM. No theory demanding “gradual change” by chance mutations can account for a highly specialized organ as the feet of the Jacana.

And yes, the more you puruse the page, the more you realize that it is not only a science page for believers of the Bible, but actually brain-washing propaganda for "Intelligent Design" horseshit. I mean, they even used "caps" like they are screaming at the kids and the sarcastic quotation marks around "gradual change"...WTF?

The Great Dinosaur Mystery is already a favourite.

It's quite a coincidence that I assumed (in speaking to jeremy just tonight as we discussed the page) that revisionists might insist that the behemoth was not a hippopotamus or elephant, but a dinosaur...and they do!

"Look at the behemoth, which I made along with you and which feed on grass like an ox. What strength he has in his loins, what power in the muscles of his belly! His tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are close-knit. His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like rods of iron. He ranks first among the works of God..." -Job 40:15-19 (NIV)

The book of Job is very old, written after the worldwide flood of Noah's time and probably about 2,000 years before Jesus was born. Here God describes a great king of the land animals like some of the biggest dinosaurs, the Diplodocus and Apatosaurus. It was a gigantic plant-eater with great muscles and very strong bones. The long Diplodocus had leg bones so strong that he could have held three others on his back.

Elephant - tail like a Cedar Tree? The behemoth were not afraid. They did not need to be; they were huge. Behemoth tails were so long and strong that God compared them to cedars--one of the largest and most spectacular trees of the ancient world.

Hippopotamus - not the behemothAfter all the behemoth had died out, many people forgot about them. Dinosaurs were extinct and the fossil skeletons that are in museums today did not begin to be put together until about 150 years ago. Today, some people have mistakenly guessed that the behemoth mentioned in the Bible might be an elephant or a hippopotamus. But those animals do not have tails like the thick, tall trunks of cedar trees!

Uh, it says "His tail sways like a cedar" SWAYS LIKE! It says nothing of size...and considering he is describing a LIVING animal which is moving...why the fuck is he mentioning its goddamned BONES, shithead!? Possibly because he is describing a FUCKING ELEPHANT WHICH HAS MOTHERFUCKING TUBE-LIKE TUSKS : "His bones are tubes of bronze"

An Apatosaurus or Diplodocus? Does it sound like he is describing a 70-90 foot long monster in that description? He compares it to a goddamed "ox" eating grass.

Perhaps if the book of Job said, "Look at the behemoth, which I made along with you and which, despite being the biggest motherfucking things I have ever fucking laid eyes on, feed on grass like an tiny ox. "...then, maybe.

Goddamnit.
