I really have had it with Marvel. the only reason they're 'killing ' Cap (and I guarantee you they aren't) is so they could get free press from national media.
What really sucks is Cap has had the best run he's EVER had and we're talking about close to 70 years of comics, and marvel has to go and screw it up. I'm gonna buy that issue today because I've been buying it and I want to see what Ed Brubaker does cause he's good. But I have a feeling that it may be the last Marvel comic i buy.
marvel has been taken over by the fanboys.

no problem.  you and your goddamn captain powers. so, were you aware of the events within said post?

This is truly news.  The incident in question occurs in a book that didn't hit the stands until just a few minutes ago....but there's obviously a huge national marketing push to get the average dude to go pick it up.

This is a pretty strange publicity stunt.

Marvel kept this revelation secret from everybody (including their vendors)...until the comic shipments started arriving this morning.

Comic book dealers must place orders a month ahead of time and then Marvel pretty much prints to order.

The average issue of Captain America only sells about 40,000-50,000 issues.

...So the shops are going to be completely unprepared and understocked for all the people who are theoretically going to flock to buy this BIG BIG news "event."

A lot of people are going to show up and find it sold out.

For some reason, part of Marvel's marketing strategy seems to be pissing people off.

and there will be those that cheer because they got theirs and its already behind a sealed protector, and in no time at all it'll be worth so much more.  and they can brag to their friends.  or sell it on ebay.

Comic shops will reorder and Marvel will reprint...but they just cost themselves thousands of potential readers who won't give a shit by next week.

And the comic shops (who are always fighting to stay in business) will be the ones who are going to look like assholes for not ordering more.

All this publicity bullshit aside, I highly recommend 'Captain America.'

In my opinion Ed Brubaker is the very best writer in the field at this moment and (aside from the pulp thriller 'Criminal') it's the title where he does his best work.

It's basically a hi-tech espionage/suspense/action book...sort of like a Tom Clancy novel, except good.  It deals with terrorist cells and global spy games in a reasonably believable way (y'know, considering the costumes and the names and such).

The characterization is extremely human and the art keeps it all grounded yet cinematic.

It's like the best show not on TV.

Despite this recent event, the story will continue and no doubt be compelling.  There is a character they've been developing to take over for Captain America for 2 years now, so this is all part of a bigger story that's been in the works.

You don't need to run to the comic store every week to get in on it.  A new paperback comes out about every 6 months reprinting each mini story arc in the overall story for about $10-$12 on amazon.  There are currently 4 of them.

If Marvel has failed to learn anything since I was collecting their stuff, I bet that there is a tremendous glut of these things sitting in warehouses awaiting the demand of the artificial hype. And, like you said, the attention will wane before they move...but enough comic fans who are not Captain America readers will pick them up and C.A. sales may even spike (who knows?)...and the comic, like most "event" comics will end up being worthless to collectors (no matter how much they spent on eBay during the first weeks) ...and in years you won't be able to give them away.

The dude with the metal arm is probably going to be the new Cap...but they'll also probably develop some intrigue with a government-sanctioned Cap as well.

Which period is he talking about?  Last fucking week?  Yesterday?

much like the "theatre edition" POTF luke skysalker action figure.  does anybody remember that?the first 50 people(in each theatre, opening day) to catch "return of the jedi"  during its re-release in 97.  got a free action figure.  many of which were immediately opened, many of which  were immediately sold to dudes offering $10 a piece to little kids. for about 6 months those things were selling for 100-150 bucks a piece.  some really crazy fuckers were paying even more.    i looked one up recently and it ain't worth shit.   kinda like the "original beatles lp" myth.  you go to flea markets and some asshole is trying to sell the white album for $75 bucks or something, and tells you it's worth more.   does he realize they made 10 MILLION OF THOSE THINGS??!!  not worth so much.
