as feared, the new stooges record sucks.  i'm pretty disappointed.  i know, i expected it, but i was holding out a bit of hope, especially with mike watt in tow. but no.  it's pretty terrible.  the bad thing is that the music is not so bad.  some of the songs have some rock potential.  but iggy fuckin ruins it.  his lyrics are fucking awful.  not awful in a "no fun, my babe, no fun"  or "she can't help cause she's not right.   no, no, no, no, no"  kind of way.  that kind of naivety was one of the great things about the stooges and even some of iggy's solo stuff ('five foot one' comes to mind.  "i'm only five foot one! i won't grow anymore!")  that stuff is great.  but when he's singing about his dick turning into a tree, and the end of "chris-chee-an-i-tee" and so forth its just awful. lots of unneccessary pussy references, i'm guessing to prove he's still vulgar and offensive. and his phrasing is that of a sixth grader entering a poetry contest, and thinks every line must not only rhyme, but have the exact same number of syllables, and more often than not, it follows the guitar riff note for note.  and he's intentionally off key in places.  my guess is to sound sloppy and punk.  jesus christ.  you're iggy pop.  you don't have to prove anything to anybody.  moral of the story.  don't put your heros up too high.   i heard a preview of mary weiss'(lead singer of teenage sensations the shangri-las of 'remember(walking in the sand)' and 'leader of the pack' fame)  first record in nearly 40 years on NPR last night. and it was actually pretty interesting.  MUCH better than the stooges record.  and that is sad.    no fun indeed.

wow.  this is interesting.  i just found this poster for a shangri-las show.  irony is that "the fabulous iguanas" are the opening band.  that was iggy pop's first band, and also how he got the nickname "iggy".  weird.
