One of the great things about having my new old big tube receiver is that it shocks the shit out of me every now and then.

Like, it shocks the shit out of you because of the way it sounds, or it really shocks the shit out of you?

If that's the later, I think you have a grounding problem... Does it have a three prong electrical plug?  Some of these old things still have two prong plugs.

Two pronger.

for some reason S_____ has been buying nothing but bags of "healthy" cheese puffs. And then her healthy meal is always, like, potato soup.

hence, I've been riding my bike a whole lot more.

How can cheese puffs be healthy?

Grounding problem.  Ask an amp repairman or some electrical appliance guy to install a three pronger.  It's not very hard to do, and it should be relatively cheap.

I'm probably overselling the shocks.  It's just static electricity shocks...but it definitely does it more than any appliance in my house.

The extra wire connects the amp chassis to the ground.  Since the amp isn't connected to the ground, any small electrical charge produced within the amp that isn't part of the circuit stays in the amp...  But if it doesn't bother you...

I finally saw Talladega Nights and found it to be most hilarious and quite unflinching in its biting satire.  Three and a half stars on a four-star system!

I saw it the other night too. But I disagree. I thought the first 30 minutes were funniest...after which it realized it was a movie and it lost something (for me). Guess the underdog/come-back-from-"defeat" thing didn't work for me.

No, no.  I appreciate it, Dan.

so i was wrong about the hiwatt.    the $900 price tag ($949 actually)  was for the head alone. which has a serial # in the 13000's. which would put it in the 1979 area. still a pretty good deal, i think, though i'm not really interested.  the cabinets  were a bit older, i believe.  and both in fairly good shape.  there were no tags on the cabinets(which i why i had assumed the $949 was inclusive)  the guy said whe wasn't sure, but thought one was priced at $799, and the other was closer to $1000.  he alluded to some sort of "tag bandit"  who had been removing tags from certains items recently.  i did find a super cool hollow body hagstrom bass for $399.  i AM thinking about that.  i have a shitty old epiphone bass i got at a yard sale for $35 bucks that sounds like an old man's asshole.  it's nice to have a bass around, especially when writing songs.  i   may end up getting a early-mid 70s fender reverb twin.($799)  from a practical point, it's very similar to the randall i currently have, but with the tubes, it produces a much warmer sound. and the fender amps are reliable, provided i don't kick the shit out of it to produce those great coil-shaking reverby sounds ala 'you're living all over me/bug' era dinosaur, jr.   which i have done to no end with the randall.

Early mid-seventies silverface Twins are cool.  As long as they don't have a master volume... But do you really need that much wattage? Those things are effin' loud (85 watts)!  You won't get any tube break-up out of it.  Personally, I prefer lower wattage Fenders.  I own an early seventies Super Reverb (45 watts) that I love to bits (I'm presently rebuilding it).  I turn the volume up to the point were things start to distort, and then ride the volume pedal (or pick harder) to switch between dirt and clean.  I also own an old Ampeg VT-22 (120 watts), which is a monster amp, and very very clean, eats Twins for breakfast, but it's a lot less dynamic than my Super.  I have to use pedals to get sounds other than squeaky clean.  Unless you're playing Surf or Country, you'll need pedals with that twin...
