I didn't like Amores Perros

I did. I think it was the first of the current crop of multi-thread stories I'd seen back in the day, so wasn't (am not) sick of the genre yet. Plus, I think Gael Garcia Bernal is very pretty to look at in a movie (even when he has super-bad hair, like in Bad Education and Y Tu Mama Tambien).

I don't know if you've noticed but most of my movie "reviews" consist of talking about how hott someone in it is to me.

Hey Dan (and/or Matt, if you sign in), what's the word in la belle ville, if any, on Young Galaxy?

Saw 'em the other night at a showcase thingy and quite liked them. They had a bit of the ol' Arcade Fire collabo vibe, but less pretentious. (Although they just signed to the Broken Social Scene label, so they're probably getting there.) Overall, pretty nice hypnotic male/female split vocals over washy guitar- and keyboard-oriented stuff.

One of the guitar dudes and I go way back. Steve Durand. Do you know him? (Ex-Tinker and uh, some other bands I can't remember.)

At the same show, also caught Apostle of Hustle -- lead dude is one of the many many BSS guitarists -- who I've seen before, and whose music is a bit Cuban-inflected; and Jason Collette who's more poppy/songwriter than
the rest, and also a BSS guitarist. (Jeez.)

But far and away, the best band that night was Holy Fuck, who played between all the sets. I've wanted to see 'em for a long time, but now glad I DIDN'T ever see 'em on a traditional stage. They might be boring that way. At this show, they played on the floor, right beside where we were standing, so we were right inside the magic. I LOVED them... Closest description I can think of is punk-rave jazz poptronica jamming. Lots of keyboard manipulation, effects-pedal tweaking (the pedals themselves were used as an instrument), live bass and drums. And one of the dudes was "playing" a film splicing machine, isolating the audio from it as part of the music/noise, in between patching yet more pedals and such into his board. Awe-some. I can't attest to the CD output (supposedly it's way more structured than the live set), but seeing them up close like that was, alone, well worth the cover charge.

Check 'em out if they're ever playing near you. Lots of energy, and holy fuck-ed-ness.

I'm impressed! I just can't get it up to do anything creative (anymore), especially on the weekends when I'm more tired than anything... Good on ya!

I can't seem to bring myself to want to see Babel.

I'm kind of sick of these mult-story/coincidence type stories.

Plus I didn't like Amores Perros, so I avoided "(X number of) Grams" too.

Me neither.

I must admit that I did had it in my head that "Amores" was a Pedro Almodóvar film. In fact, I originally assumed that the films of Alejandro González Iñárritu and Alfonso Cuarón were his as well. It was simple laziness on my part. It seemed that Almodóvar was the most popular Spanish director in North America and every Spanish-language film I watched in the 1990s seemed to be one of his...it was that simple. It's possible that my being sloshed during the period in which I took them in may have contributed to my ignorance, but I believe it was just a lack of interest over all. I rented "Amores" only somewhat aware of the hype around it when it had been in theaters. I also believe my sister may have recommended it. Anyway, I was living in Dorval, so it must have been 2001 and around the time that I started really coming apart. I wanted to enjoy it, but I found it to be overwrought, leaden and much of it as evidence of style over substance. There were elements (and storylines) that I enjoyed, but overall there was something absent in the director's craft. "Y tu mamá también" I found simply awful. The link of Gael García Bernal probably cemented the vague understanding of one director, but I was never actually sure of any of it because I even forgot Almodóvar's name from time to time.
 
When I rented "11'09''01", I found Iñárritu's bit to be the most visceral of the segments, and one of the best just behind Lelouch and Loach (a favourite director of mine now, actually). I had no idea that he did 21 Grams until after I began watching it, and even then I found it equally bleak and oppressive. Not as sluggish as "Amores", but not exactly a film I wished to sit through a second time.

Cuarón's Harry Potter was probably the most interesting (not an at all difficult task since he was up against the pure shite of Chris Columbus), but I wasn't convinced of anything until I saw "Children of Men"

Speaking of Broken Social Scene...I still have not heard more than a snippet here and a snippet there.

I am listening to a band right now who was, at least according to a review on their myspace, compared to BSS: "They use some layered instrumental verses much like Canada’s Broken Social Scene, to electrify the almost-not-there vocals on “Some=1” and further more show their versatility on “Little Known Fact,” a shimmery sway evoking song."

I wouldn't rush out to see Volver again or anything, but I was entertained anyway -- it's way funnier than expected, and touching. Plus, OMG, could Penelope Cruz be hotter? The rack is spectacular in this one, if that's any endorsement. And she's a much better actress in her native tongue. (I'm ass-uming, since I've never actually seen her in an English-speaking role...unless you count the L'Oreal or Clairol or whatever commercials for hair dye.)

But I think the same of Antonio Banderas. (Matador was the first Almodóvar movie I saw and I thought he was great in it.)
