I started talking to Tripp, Matt and Scott over the 'net back in the late nineties.  Must be getting close to 10 years now!

Damn!

(speaking of nigel)

Were only making plans for nigel
We only want whats best for him
Were only making plans for nigel
Nigel just needs this helping hand
And if young nigel says hes happy
He must be happy
He must be happy in his work
Were only making plans for nigel
He has his future in a british steel
Were only making plans for nigel
Nigels whole future is as good as sealed
And if young nigel says hes happy
He must be happy
He must be happy in his work
Nigel is not outspoken
But he likes to speak
And loves to be spoken to
Nigel is happy in his work
Were only making plans for nigel

not that i was ever a huge fan , but that was always one of my favorite xtc songs.   and somewhat surprisingly, i actually kinda enjoy the way primus redid it.

I like XTC quite a lot.  Not everything, but I do own a large part of their discography.  Drums & Wires, Skylarking and Nonsuch are stellar records.  I'm a sucker for good pop songs.

It's not even 1:00 but I'm slightly on the trashed side. At least I managed to get myself back on track in the exercise world. I did didn't miss a day this week. I think I'm drunk enough to get S_ _ _ to drive me aroound to look at exercise equipment. I don't know whether to get some sort of cardio machine or a weight machine. Maybe just a bench and some weights. I really like getting stoned and exercising. It's a really odd phase I'm going through. Though I feel like no matter how much I work out, I'll always be a wuss at heart.

I'm a sucker for good pop songs.

i'm the same way.  and xtc grows on me more each time i hear them.  it's one of those things where i was either too young to even know who they were(earliest stuff), or during the mid to late 80's,  my taste leaned toward sonic youth, dinosaur jr, flaming lips, etc, and if it wasn't noisy guitars, i didn't pay much attention.  my loss, i guess.  there's so much great music from that era that i'm just discovering(or re-discovering).

maybe the main thing is, i didn't have any friends who were into xtc growing up. and i either heard bands because my friends were listening to them, or i would scour the local "cool" record store (spinal vinyl)  and buy stuff that looked appealing.  (which is how "oh my gawd!"  entered my life)  i think if i would have heard them more as a kid,  i would be a big fan now.  xtc is not THAT dissimilar to the cure.  and i used to play "the top" like fucking crazy as a kid.

the thing i hate the most about pharmaceutical literature is that i start to take on the symptoms and feel the adverse effects while i'm reading.  i'm sure there is a german word for this feeling.

I came across the iMusic BBS while LSD-tripping...we were in the post-peak-drinking-red-wine-and-smoking-grass headspace when I think W_ _ _ _ found it while our friend S _ _  showed her how to use her computer. I was so excited to see Tripp on there posting away. I believe iMusic had done one of their purges because the first message available clearly was not the first on the board and there were only thirteen posts. S _ _ printed up the page so I could read it (she wanted to move on to other sites) and find it again. I still have the sheets tucked away in my drawer, and they were printed up on January 24, 1999 - so that's when I joined the board.

The first post I have (this is when we were all "Anonymous")...so, from the time capsule:

Fri May 8 07:03:56 PDT 1998
Anonymous
hey, everybody Grifter Tripp here. Seriously. Thanks for all the kind words about our little band. Just want to assure you that we're not breaking up. We may move in different directions for a few months. To that end, Those Bastard Souls are going into the studio soon, the WHOLE band, no pseudonyms. Scott is changing Hot Monkey to Lucky and I think he's kicking me out. Me and Stan have reunited with our childhood compadre John stivers of Impala fame.  We're calling it the Total Strangers and we're touring this June. Hope to see you there. Love you. Tripp

The other posts do not appear to be from any of us...unless Dan asked about lyrics or "What happened to Sub Pop? Any new recordings since Possession?"?

There was a post advertising a zine named Jim that had a Dave Shouse interview, one asking if anyone had songs tabbed out (this person had "weebles" in their email address), another from a frustrated fan from England, another fan from the Czech Republic, another from South Africa (christ, we were not so homogenous back then...what happened?) and someone else relieved to hear that Grifters were still together because they had heard from an unidentified Sup Pop employee that they had called it quits.

Other notables from this snapshot of time (culled from Tripp's four other posts which were posted Nov 7- Dec 29):

* Scott's realindie.com being run out of Sun Studios
* TBS' big year with tour ("So the Grifters aren't going to be doing jack shit for a long time. Thanks Dave!")
* The collapse of Total Strangers with Jared leaving to play bass with Megan O'Reilly. Other Strangers continue as quasi-cover band
* Lucky back together and to play a show with Fugazi (??)
* Lucky album almost completed, to be titled "Gypsy Rose Tea", recorded at Sun with "about 20 musicians from the fine Memphis stables"
* New Memphis acts and albums to look for in 1999: "The Satyrs, Lucero, Vegas Thunder, The Compulsive Gamblers return, Megan O'Reilly, Jett[y] Webb, and a new Clears record out soon"
* Tripp, Stan & Stivers backing Melissa Dunn
* Tripp joins Jetty Webb and is looking forward to it (Dec 29th message)
* mention of possible Grifters "show here in Memphis in Feb or March"

A few posts and emails and on February 26, 1999 W _ _ _ _ and I were at the Barristers show...just over a month after stumbling across the board.

I never would have guessed that I would end up posting almost daily for close to eight years now.

Cry man.  i really miss those guys.  k__ and i have been together for 12 years.   at one point, about 9-10 years ago.  we actually were planning a wedding.  the grifters agreed they would play at our wedding(although scott pretty much thought it was a hilarious idea since most of their "love" songs didn't exactly have happy endings)  we still are not married.  i still blame the grifters break-up as a major reason for that fact.  i don't want to settle for a surrogate band. one  that plays "brick house" , "play that funky music", and "mustang sally"  despite the fact that i told them not to.

disclaimer:  i don't really blame the grifters.  i think we are not married because you know,  "if it ain't broke............"
